Before:

Kinja'd!!!

Pink sticker would change color every year.

After:

Kinja'd!!!

They combined the month and year stickers and made grey the permanate color.

At first I didn’t like the idea but now now I kinda like it. Blends in well with the plate. A year from now when all these new ones are in full circulation it will be easy to spot expired registrations.

Also I renewed two months early for the new sticker. I’m a license plate guy.

We couldn’t have a bowl game last year because we’re so new to the conference.

Also a University that is covered in snow most of the winter shouldn’t be in the Sun Belt.

Oh man! Super cool — thanks for that update. Going to be a lot of NC plates for years to come with redundant month stickers, since NC never replaces plates.

If you’re into plates why don’t you get a cool design?! NC has so many!

I really want a cooler plate but it’s something like $30 extra per year that I could spend on other plates like vintage ones. I’m considering getting a vanity plate with the SHP (state highway patrol) prefix and a random number following it just to mess with people.

Actually NC began recalling older plates in about 2007 since some of the ones from the 80s were fading real bad and the ABC-1234 numbering scheme was running out of combinations. (Reason why I have a C serries plate issued in 2014).

I know I’m weird, but every time I see a NC plate and read the “First in Flight” logo I think of them running away from something. Just sayin’.

They didn’t run out of ABC-1234s! OK crazy thing of the day about NC plates.

When they went to ABC-1234 format, they started each series with N. So the first plate was ANA-1000. When they hit AZZ-9999, they went to BNA-1000. After BZZ-9999, they went to CNA-1000. etc etc. So they finally hit ZZZ-9999 and were brainstorming new ideas when someone as like “uh... why not use A through M”?

This sounds crazy, but look around — you will not see ANY NC plates whose second letter is between A and M, except for the new ones (which are now in the “D” series). Now they are going AAA-1000 through AMZ-9999, then BAA-1000 through BMZ-9999, etc. This is how (relatively small) NC “ran out” of 7-digit plates in 15-20 yrs when it has taken Georgia more than a decade to get through A, B, C, and now (oddly) P.

Makes sense that they’re finally recalling old plates though. Some NC plates have been on the road since the early 80s...

Didn’t know you were so into NC license plates or licence plates at all for that matter. I figured you wouldn’t want to hear the whole complex story of why NC issues plates like it does (a complicated story as you explained) so I just used the “they ran out of combinations” scapegoat.

Licensing and registration are one of the dullest parts car culture. I’ve tried talking about NC plates at parties and it clears rooms quickly, much faster than regular car talk. I find it quite fascinating, being able to identify when and sometimes where plates were issued and collecting interesting plates (I have a second serries first in flight plate with ABC-123 numbering and also a set of Allied Forces Italy plates from a US army base).

License plate collecting is also a fun and cheap hobby for any enthusiast. Maybe a Jalopnik feature on how cool license plates are? Sounds like more of a Torchinsky thing to do but you sound into it.

Yeah! I swap plates on my cars in all my videos; I buy weird ones on eBay. I agree though — it’s impossible to get others into them, which is why I’ve refrained thus far. Perhaps someday, a plate related column! Though there was this one, which is still one of my faves:
